Hi,Iv recently started using the student version of 3ds Max 2011 and a demo version of Vray 2.0. Im having major trouble assigning material from Vray to my model in 3ds Max.Iv searched the internet high and low and i cant find a tutorial or help and how to achieve this in Max 2011.Can anybody post a step by step guide on what to do?
Im struggling quite a bit with the material side of 3ds max and adding Vray makes it more complicated.Im getting my.mat files from if thats any help. Thanks in advance. I have to ask, if you're a new user then why are you even thinking about VRay?
Max comes with Mental Ray for free, but both of those are what you might call 'advanced' renderers - I would start with the Scanline renderer - It's much simpler and easier to understand/work with. When you've matered that, then move on to MR. Once familiar with the kind of results you can get then consider other renderers like VRay, FinalRender etc. They are all different and will produce images with a different 'feel' to them - only you can decide which is best, but that's a fair way down the road given you're only just starting out.Sorry, I can't help directly with your question because I don't have VRay (not even the demo).
To load a material library, click the big down-arrow button (at the side of the search field) Open Material Library. Expand the library so you can see the contents, Drag and drop one of the materials directly onto your object, or into the main View area if you want to edit it, then drag from the final output to your object. This is basic stuff which is covered in the main Help and in the tutorials (downloadable if you don't get them with the student version). As for Scanline materials - the idea is that they are easy to make yourself rather than depending on others to make them for you. Student = Learning = not just downloading others' work from the net (if you get my drift). The basic principles follow through to the other types which is why I suggested them.
If you're familiar with Vray then use if by all means, but it's a lot more complicated - you may find yourself spending too much time on the materials and not enough on other areas of Max - like creating the models to which you will (eventually) apply the materials in the first place.
